Tips for Choosing Your Iftar Menu!

17 April 2019

With the arrival of Ramadan, iftar meals begin to grace our tables. While some of us welcome guests at home, others are eager to enjoy an elegant iftar spread with loved ones at a restaurant. Restaurants, hotels, and specialty kitchens offer a wide range of menus for iftar. So, what should you look out for to avoid unpleasant surprises and ensure a delightful evening?

  • Know the Serving Style
Iftar menus typically come in three forms: buffet, set menu, or a combination where appetizers are buffet-style, and main courses are set menus. Be sure of the service style included in the menu you choose.

  • Look for Vegetables
After a long day of fasting, heavy meals can be uncomfortable both that evening and the next day. Opt for menus that include vegetable dishes, particularly olive oil-based options, for a smooth transition.

  • Focus on Hygiene
It’s ideal if appetizers are served individually rather than on shared platters. If you’re trying a new place, keep in mind that shared appetizers may be re-served to other customers.

  • Check the Variety of Appetizers
For shared appetizers, ask about the number and types offered. Be sure to clarify items listed as “assorted cheeses” or “vegetable platters” to know exactly what you’re getting.

  • Confirm the Main Course
The main dish is a highlight of any iftar meal. Make sure you know what’s being served as the main course, and if options are available, don’t hesitate to ask.

  • Choose Seasonal Fish for Iftar
If you prefer fish, ensure it’s a seasonal variety. Opt for grilled or steamed options for a lighter meal.

  • Check for Essentials in the Menu
An ideal iftar menu should include soup, salad, an appetizer plate, warm or cold starters, and main dishes. Review the menu to ensure it has these elements to avoid any unpleasant surprises.

  • Ask About Beverages
It’s essential to clarify whether beverages are unlimited and what’s included in the drink selection.

  • Opt for Traditional Light Desserts
Ramadan menus often feature light, milk-based desserts or small portions. Güllaç, sütlaç, and lokma, which has recently regained popularity, are great choices.

  • Evaluate the Menu Price
A well-prepared iftar menu generally starts around 50 TL. For menus priced lower, take a closer look and inquire about the ingredients used to ensure quality.
